Atenea

Podenco · Female

The first time Atenea was seen was in February this year in a Benamejí. A couple of days later, a young man called to report an abandoned dog in the village. When volunteers went to find her, upon seeing her, their hearts sank. Her ears were bleeding, and she had been wandering the streets completely blind due to a severe eye infection. A volunteer took Atenea straight to the veterinary clinic, where she remained for several days receiving the urgent treatment that she needed to stabilise her and bring the infection under control. During that time, they worked closely with our partner GPAR to arrange a place for her at the shelter. Since arriving at the shelter, Atenea has adapted wonderfully to shelter life. She is full of life, playful, intelligent, and has shown incredible resilience despite everything she has endured. She loves going for walks with her canine companions and takes everything in her stride. Tractors, traffic, everyday noises, and meeting new people don't bother her at all. She enjoys making friends with every dog and every person she meets. Atenea is a quick learner. When she first arrived, she tended to pull on the lead, but with patience and gentle guidance she is learning to walk calmly and enjoys exploring the world by your side. As she is loose in the patio food is on hand 24/7 so she will need to learn a new routine, also this means she is not housetrained so will likely need some training. Now, Atenea has left her painful past behind. She is ready to start the next chapter of her life with a family who will love her, cherish her, and give her the forever home she has always deserved Atenea is neutered, vaccinated and will be tested for Mediterranean diseases. She is passported and available for adoption now. If you would prefer to make a one off donation, please click below

About Atenea

What life with Atenea looks like

Atenea is a adult podenco dog waiting at Hope for Podencos in Albacete.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Atenea, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Atenea?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hope for Podencos handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Atenea on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Atenea if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hope for Podencos will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Atenea already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Atenea isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hope for Podencos early rather than rehoming privately; they know Atenea and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
