Atila

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

Many of our animals have sad stories that bring them to the animal shelter, but often the knowledge that with arrival at the shelter, medical care and hope for a proper home, things get better than before. But when dogs have to be given up by sad families because the financial situation no longer allows keeping an animal, or because the best friend has died or moved into a nursing home, then the situation is different. Atila is also one of these unfortunate beings who, after many years as a beloved pet, have to learn about life in the animal shelter and the kennel. His family adopted him as a baby, he was spoiled and had a really great life, until the economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic caused Atila to be separated from his humans. When Atila came into the care of Puntanimals in March 2022, he almost broke down at the unfamiliar, loud and frightening environment. Huddled in his box, he barely dared to walk to his food bowl. Now, the eight-year-old (as of 07/2022) gentleman has come to terms with living in the animal shelter. Our friends have introduced him to one dog after another, and now Atila has some really good buddies with whom he likes to play and sunbathe. Atila enjoys walking with volunteers and shows his best side, perhaps also because he knows that cuddles and cookies will follow. Atila is eight years old - and even though we would like to believe that age is not so important when a dog comes along as kind and modest as Atila, it is precisely this stage of life that often makes our animals invisible. For those who would like something young, he is too old, and for these very special people who give our seniors a home, he is still too fit and young ... Dogs like Atila often face the judgment "life in the animal shelter". Atila is also a medium-sized mixed breed, blind in one eye (this small disability has been with him since puppyhood and does not bother him in the slightest), mouse-gray and he has no 300 tricks to charm visitors. He is simply the unobtrusive, nice dog that you pass by with a smile. Please do not scroll past Atila with a smile. Atila only knows life in a nice home, with people who love him - and he really wishes to leave the world of bars and concrete floors to move into a soft dog bed. Please give him a chance ...

About Atila

What life with Atila looks like

Atila is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Atila, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Atila?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Atila on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Atila if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Atila already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Atila isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Atila and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
