Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Gender: male Age: born March 5, 2020 chemically neutered Breed: Labrador shoulder height: approx. 55cm Weight: 28.5kg severe hip dysplasia food allergy (beef) thyroid dysfunction Happy and a stalker has been in foster home since November 2025 living there with cats, a female dog, and children orientation to humans present, but not easily recallable in busy environments (currently in training) has experienced very little, needs to catch up now UPDATE FROM THE foster home 09.02.2026 First of all: Balou is doing well. His thyroid levels are back to normal, so the next check-up is scheduled for October. His knee is also healing well, with the next check-up in June. He still doesn't put his leg down properly, and he's not walking perfectly yet. He now goes to physiotherapy about every 2 weeks, and at the next appointment, he will get exercises to do at home. He listens quite well in the house now, even without "payment." Outdoors, he is responsive when in familiar surroundings. He usually walks well on the leash, but overall, his leash manners still need improvement. In unfamiliar surroundings, he is still quite out of control.

About Balou

What life with Balou looks like

Balou is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutzverein Rotenburg a.d.F. e.V. in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Rotenburg a.d.F. e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Rotenburg a.d.F. e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Rotenburg a.d.F. e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
