Balu

Labrador Retriever · Male · Adult · 4 years

I am Balu, a strong Labrador Retriever looking for a forever home. Unfortunately, I've had several stops in my life, and I finally want to settle down. Would you like to know more about me? I am confident, very food-motivated, and eager to learn—training really makes me happy. At the same time, I have a strong prey drive (wild animals/birds, occasionally even cars), so I need clear leadership when I'm outside. I wear my muzzle reliably. I defend resources like food (and sometimes toys)—in this context, there was also a biting incident. With appropriate management and my muzzle in tricky situations, I am manageable. With familiar people, I enjoy physical contact, but I don't like strangers at all. I know how to ride in a car and I look forward to structured exercises like impulse control, anti-prey training, nose work, and drag training—I learn well and excel in these areas. With compatible female dogs, I could get along depending on the chemistry, but it is recommended to be an individual dog. Whether I can also be alone sometimes, we would need to test and practice together patiently. I wish for dog-experienced, confident people who are not afraid of training with me, who are interested in dog training classes, and who can give me reliable structure. For me, an ideal environment is a quiet one (suburban/rural) with manageable levels of stimulation. Children should not live in the household. If you give me time to settle in and work fairly with me, you will get a smart partner who is happy to work with you. Finally, I hope for some good fortune.

About Balu

What life with Balu looks like

Balu is a large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior with food and toys, history of bite incident, requires muzzle training, strong prey drive, needs structured training

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
