Adopt Bao

Golden Retriever · Male · Adult · 4 years

Bao is a dog who has a huge amount of energy for life and... clearly defined goal: to go, sniff, discover the world. This is not a typical golden retriever focused on closeness with humans, needing humans like air. Bao is a true explorer - a dog who feels best in motion, in the terrain, with his nose to the ground and a stick in his mouth. Bao is very strong and energetic, especially at the beginning of a walk, when he finally can leave the shelter's kennel and run into the world. He loves walks, exploration, sniffling - it's his reason for living. He has a total obsession with sticks and branches - and we mean both small sticks and whole little trees :-) On walks, dogs in the distance pass calmly, without barking, he reacts only when another dog starts barking at him, we haven't had the opportunity to check his reaction in direct contact with other dogs yet (we will complete this information soon). It sometimes happens that he pulls, but he doesn't jerk, he easily allows redirection, responds nicely to recall. He is a big softie - treats are a great motivation for him. Petting is not his priority, but he likes scratching on his rump and belly. Bao is not a dog "to cuddle". Humans are mainly his walking partner, not the center of his world. However, it can be seen that with calm, consistent handling he can calm down and work beautifully together. Bao is looking for: - an active home that likes long walks, forests, meadows and working with a dog, - a caregiver experienced, knowledgeable about the breed or ready to learn, physically strong and calm, - a place where he will be able to fulfill his species needs - movement, sniffing, tasks, - home without children. During the adoption process, we recommend a pre-adoption visit to check how Bao will find himself in the potential walking area and house. We do not recommend Bao for a home where a lot is happening, it is noisy, where there are often guests. Bao is a dog with potential - when he gets what he always lacked: time, movement, mental stimulation, space and understanding, he has a chance to become a wonderful companion for adventures. If you are looking for a dog with whom you won't get bored, and instead of the couch you choose the forest - Bao may be waiting just for you.

About Bao

What life with Bao looks like

Bao is a large adult golden retriever dog waiting at Schronisko Na Paluchu in Warsaw.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bao, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bao?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Na Paluchu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bao on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bao if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Na Paluchu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bao already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bao isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Na Paluchu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bao and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
