Hij is een loyale hond die graag bij zijn eigen mensen in de buurt is en veel waarde hecht aan rust en voorspelbaarheid. In sommige situaties kan Barney spanning ervaren rondom eten of voorwerpen die voor hem belangrijk zijn. Dit soort gedrag ontwikkelt zich vaak al in de puppytijd. Wanneer pups bijvoorbeeld iets van straat oppakken en daar emotioneel op wordt gereageerd of wanneer iets snel wordt afgepakt, kan er onbedoeld spanning ontstaan rondom het verliezen van datgene wat zij hebben gevonden.
