Barney

Mixed Breed · Male

Gender: male dog Born on: approx. 2016 Breed: mixed breed At the animal shelter since: 27.07.2020 Very trainable and attentive Timid and shy Experienced dog owners only No children Conditionally compatible with other dogs Came from very poor living conditions The handsome Barney has clearly been through a lot in his life, though we only know scattered fragments of his story. He originally came to Germany from abroad and ended up, via various detours, on a farm in Lower Saxony that hoarded hard-to-place dogs. In the spring, this farm was cleared out, along with approximately 70 dogs who had been forced to live under horrific conditions—confined in pens and crates, often completely isolated and without daylight. Barney was taken in by Franziskushof Kalletal together with several other dogs, but his terrible past has left deep marks on his soul, making him not at all easy to handle. We took the timid Barney into our care because we can offer better housing and training opportunities for a dog like him than the much smaller, friendly association could. Many thanks to Franziskushof for your trust in our work! Barney is a friendly male dog who is initially somewhat shy and reserved but, after a short warm-up period, can become very playful and exuberant. Still, he always remains in a “half-past-seven” stance—constantly a bit skeptical. It’s known that he spent several months on the farm confined to a tiny crate, which is why he initially had virtually no muscle mass and likely also why he doesn’t allow anyone to touch his flank or hindquarters. If someone does, he instantly spins around and snaps. All medical possibilities have already been thoroughly checked by the vet, but nothing physical could be found. Barney needs people who will give him time to slowly process his past experiences and approach him with great sensitivity. This young male dog is highly trainable and enjoys jumping over obstacles or learning new tricks—activities that help him truly switch off and simply be a dog. He is only conditionally compatible with other dogs; we are gradually testing this further here with friendly dogs and have already managed to convince one or two that fellow animals can actually make wonderful playmates. Barney walks perfectly on a leash and already knows several commands, which he obediently follows. Unfortunately, he has bitten multiple times, having learned the hard way that people often ignore his subtle signals—like body language, growling, or snapping—until he felt he had no other choice. This handsome male dog has a prey drive, so cats should not live in his new home. We are looking for active, child-free people who are patient, loving, and understanding—people who will give him the time and space he needs while continuing to support and encourage his progress.

About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Lübbecke in Lübbecke.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Lübbecke handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Lübbecke will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Lübbecke early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
