Barney

adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process The cute Barney, with the blonde fur and sweet floppy ears, looks like a little Mini-Retriever. He found a great family in Bielefeld, but unfortunately, he has to leave them again for personal reasons and is searching for new people to make happy. Barney has already settled in well, is house-trained, walks nicely on a leash, and is still quite active. He looks forward to beautiful nature walks and would also be very happy about a nice garden where he can explore, lie down, and play. Apple-picking from the apple tree is also one of his favorite hobbies 😀 Barney is a quiet German Shepherd who unfortunately didn't have a nice life so far. Through his tough past, where he was surely beaten, he sometimes gets scared by sudden movements. It helps him a lot if everything that happens to him is briefly named. So he knows that "leash," "collar," etc., are good things and can be put on without problems. Barney is extremely smart and learns quickly. He gratefully accepts things and is happy about every support. Small children should not live in the household, as they could upset him. Unfortunately, Barney was one of the long-term residents of the shelter and had waited more than 2 years in a small cell of just 2 square meters before he was finally allowed to travel. Barney was brought to the public shelter in Bistrita by the dog catchers. Before that, he lived with his dog friend Schlumpfine in a chain in an abandoned house. The house was sold, and the dogs were simply left behind. Barney is about 8 years old and brings a small to medium height of around 45-40 cm. Currently, he still has a bit of extra weight that can be trained away with exercise. In the shelter, Barney always showed compatibility with all the other dogs. When he was once allowed in the yard, he was completely neutral and didn't bother the other dogs. Currently, he shows some leash issues in the foster home during dog encounters. However, a trainer has already been involved, and he is making great progress. We wish for Barney a more rural home where he can have plenty of peace and can be a prince, to finally make up for everything he had to go without for so long. Barney is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas. He brings his EU pet passport and can be adopted after a positive match. Herzlichen Dank Ilona S. About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
