"Cuddle-starved and lively Monk" Gender: male, neutered Date of birth: May 2016 In animal shelter since: October 2023 Gets along with dogs: after a get-to-know phase Has children in the same household: no Looking for a home: outskirts or countryside The cuddle-starved, 2016-born mixed-breed male dog Basil (pronounce: "Bäzzil") needs a get-to-know phase with people to build trust. The same applies to dogs; after a few joint social walks, Basil is also friendly in direct contact with other dogs and politely passes by unfamiliar dogs at a distance. Basil is house-trained and could already spend some time alone in his last home. He rides very well in the car and knows the basic commands. Basil sometimes shows resource-defensive behavior (chest and lying spot) – the more trust he builds with his trusted people, the less this behavior disappears. In the animal shelter in the courtyard, Basil is very calm, but in his last home, he was also a good guard dog. On the other hand, despite his age, Basil is a lively fellow outdoors, likes to run around, and loves long walks and water. Indoors, he enjoys extensive cuddle sessions. As Basil does not get along with city life, we are looking for a quiet home on the green outskirts or in the countryside, a garden is not necessary. Basil is a "Monk" (which occurs more frequently in dogs) and therefore requires regular routines that give him security. (especially chest harness and muzzle use). Due to incorrect handling and pain, a biting incident unfortunately occurred in his last home. However, with good training progress and being free from pain, this should be avoidable in his future home with structured routines.

About Basil

What life with Basil looks like

Basil is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basil, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basil?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basil on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basil if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basil already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basil isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basil and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
