Adopt Basti

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

loving, people-oriented Basti originally came from Romania. He was lucky and was able to leave Romania behind and arrive at our dog shelter in Essen. To his trusted people, Basti is friendly and open. He enjoys being stroked and relishes getting full attention. He already runs well on a chest harness and leash, exploring the wide world excitedly. He is also house-trained. Basti likes to be brushed and plays with balls. In Romania, he was described as getting along well. Here, he lives alone in the yard. Therefore, we would like to place Basti as a single dog. We are looking for experienced people for the handsome male dog. Basti also has a blue spot on his tongue. We suspect that a Chow Chow may have contributed to his heritage. The Chow Chow is not a dog for everyone. Those considering getting a Chow Chow should familiarize themselves with the breed's independent nature and consider whether they can handle it. His stubbornness and independence require consistent training and an absolutely reliable owner on whom Basti can rely. As a beginner dog, Basti is not suitable. In his yard, Basti has already shown territorial behavior. People he likes he tolerates and is happy to see. Toward strangers, he reacts distantly, reserved, and sometimes even aggressively. The new home should therefore be quiet and childless. It would be great if Basti could be a single dog. Sometimes helping means letting go: Basti has now moved to our friendly animal shelter in Bad Salzuflen. There, he can be worked with more professionally and closely, and his needs can be better addressed. Of course, we maintain close contact and remain interested and informed. Many thanks to the great team there for giving him this chance. For more information, please contact the colleagues there directly:.

About Basti

What life with Basti looks like

Basti is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt in Essen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basti, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basti?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basti on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basti if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basti already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basti isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basti and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
