Basti

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 13 years

Basti has finally been rehomed in the beautiful Muldental following the receipt of the Tasso documents in February 2017! ... And another sad case in 2016 - Basti's new owner passed away after a short time of happiness together. A great animal lover, after our independent Lennox found a home with him, came our witch, who was already 13 years old, but a fit oldie. Both had many cared-for years in their new home, and the witch reached a remarkable age until he had to let her go. There's no doubt that Basti was allowed to move immediately when he asked, we were very happy. Now we hope that the farewell was peaceful and wish the ones left behind the strength to process everything. Basti has naturally moved back in with us again and is once again looking for a new home! ... Basti was finally rehomed into his new home in May 2016 thanks to Tierisch, Tierisch and as the successor of our former protectees Lennox and Senta! ... I am male, neutered, microchipped and born around 2008. I have been waiting for a new home since February 2016. I am about 65 cm tall. This is what my caregivers say about me: Basti was given up to us because the previous owner, due to her age and Basti's urge to move around, was overwhelmed over the years. She regularly inquires about him and misses Basti very much. Basti was initially a bit insecure, but warms up quickly and gains trust. He loves walks of any kind; although he is not so well trained on a leash at first, he behaves politely past other animals. Whether he is completely compatible with male dogs, we cannot say exactly, it would need to be tested. He likes female dogs, and according to the previous owner, his preferred companion for walks was also a male dog. We assume that he liked to start off at an open fence, where he shows himself not as an escape artist. Despite great love for dogs, there was certainly also a lack of exercise, as Basti is far from being ready for the scrap heap. Basti is an ideal beginner's dog, he already has some training, but would also enjoy a new owner with further training ambitions.

About Basti

What life with Basti looks like

Basti is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basti, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basti?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basti on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basti if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basti already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basti isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basti and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
