Adopt Baztan

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Update November 10, 2024 Baztán: Mastiff crossbreed, a large, energetic, and strong dog. He is very affectionate with the people he knows. He adores attention and if you are with him, whether in the kennel enclosure or walking around the animal shelter, he won't leave your side. He sits in front of you and if you crouch down, he puts a paw on you to get you to pet him. With his thick coat, we always give him good brushes whenever we can, and he must like it because he always behaves superbly. Inside the house, he has good behavior. He takes a bit to trust strangers, especially some men. We don't know exactly what experiences he's had, but we suppose they weren't pleasant. He can be a bit rough because he is big, but he's not aware of this and he has a lot of energy with little opportunity to release it properly. He needs someone with time and patience, but he has a lot to offer and we are sure he will be an irreplaceable life companion.-------------- My name is BAZTÁN and I was abandoned in a village on the outskirts of Madrid. Being so big and running scared, people were scared to see me. A person tied me to a bench, but since I was terrified, I started to struggle with the leash and became even more panicked. What a mess I made. Luckily, a volunteer came to pick me up. It took a bit to untie me from the bench, but then I started to relax and showed my true character. I am a very friendly, grateful, and affectionate dog. I like being petted. I have been given therapy baths because I was picked up with a terrible coat, but now I look much better. I can walk on a leash. I have already been neutered. Leishmania analysis is negative. According to general analyses, there is no suspicion of Ehrlichia. August 15, 2022: He is very friendly and sociable, loves being with people, has a lot of personality, and sometimes likes to howl. Putting the harness on him is easy, though he gets quite excited. He walks well, doesn't pull much, except when he sees something that catches his attention, then he pulls quite a bit. On walks, he has no problem with many dogs but there are some, generally males, with whom he doesn't get along well.

Menudo disgusto me llevé.

About Baztan

What life with Baztan looks like

Baztan is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Baztan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Baztan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Baztan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Baztan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Baztan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Baztan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Baztan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
