Bella

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Bella is a wonderful, affectionate, and gentle dog with a calm demeanor and a huge heart. She loves being close to her people, is cuddly, curious, and playful. With familiar individuals, she shows incredible warmth and trust. However, in new or noisy situations, she can still appear uncertain and somewhat shy. She enjoys walks just as much as interactive activities and delights in mental challenges such as puzzle toys and playful tasks that stimulate her mind. Car rides stress Bella, which is why a calm daily routine is especially important for her. At the vet, she is friendly and easygoing. Bella lives with leishmaniasis, which was not treated before her arrival at our shelter, resulting in joint problems already developing. Due to her leishmaniasis, Bella likely has a shortened life expectancy. Also because of the leishmaniasis, Bella requires special food on an ongoing basis; she tolerates it well and enjoys eating it. Despite all this, Bella is an incredibly wonderful dog who gives her people so much love, closeness, and joy. We’ve already seen how well she’s thriving here at the shelter. In a new home, she will undoubtedly open up even more. We wish for her a loving home in a quiet, preferably rural setting, with patient and understanding people who can provide her with the security she needs and are willing to learn about her condition. In some cantons, Bella is considered a dog requiring a permit, so a permit from the veterinary office is necessary.

DE·Show original

About Bella

What life with Bella looks like

Bella is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim beider Basel in Basel.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bella, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bella?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim beider Basel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bella on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bella if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim beider Basel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bella already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bella isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim beider Basel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bella and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
