Adopt Ben

Mixed Breed · Male

Description Our animal welfare workers report: A colleague from the animal shelter was invited to a family gathering at a restaurant; it could have been a beautiful evening - but it ended worryingly. To have a cigarette, she went to the backyard and there she saw him - with a heavy iron chain around his neck, unworthy, among the trash cans, without water, without much room to move, behind a wire fence. A large male dog, who seemed pleased about the change of having a visitor in this dark, dirty place, even wagged his tail. The animal shelter colleague cautiously approached and quickly made a secret video; the large male dog showed himself to be friendly even at the first approach of the stranger. The length of the cigarette was up, she couldn't risk being noticed, so the restaurant owners wouldn't take out their anger on the dog. In the weeks that followed, the animal welfare workers tried to convince the restaurant owner to keep the dog better or give him up. Fortunately, he decided to hand the dog over to the animal welfare workers. Finally! Now a sponsor had to be found who would cover the accommodation for the large four-legged friend. When that also succeeded, the animal welfare workers picked him up and learned his name for the first time: Ben. Ben came to a private animal shelter, where he was cooperative from the start and courteous, playful, and friendly towards both people and fellow animals. The big guy can also go on walks on a leash, although it's uncertain whether Ben is familiar with environmental stimuli. Bens heart is big, so big that he could forgive humans for their wrongdoings and wants to give us another chance. Ben is making great efforts in the shelter for a very good report card; he deserves a good life away from chained confinement and human neglect. Who has an XXL-bed for this social, generous fur nose? He allowed me to lead him on the leash without any problems, observed his surroundings with interest, and enjoyed the cuddles. A gentle, big boy who simply wants to belong. Please note:

About Ben

What life with Ben looks like

Ben is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ben, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ben?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ben on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ben if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ben already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ben isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ben and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
