Adopt Ben

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Ben is a friendly, but initially shy male dog who desires his own home. The athletic fellow loves long walks, enjoys swimming, and would also be enthusiastic about jogging or dog sports. Mentally, Ben also wants to be challenged. Whether it's nose work, intelligence games, or small tricks – Ben is enthusiastic when engaged with him and eager to show what he can do. With other dogs, Ben is usually very well tolerated. During walks, Ben greets all fellow animals first and wants to join them. If, however, he is teased, he will gladly return the favor. He's right to do so! ;) Ben already walks well on a leash and is very recallable on a lead. He is always in a hurry because there are so many interesting things to discover out there. His people should therefore be adventure-loving and good on their feet. Couch potatoes would not be a good fit for Ben, although he turns into an extremely clingy cuddle monster when at home, resting from his exercise routine and dreaming of the small adventures he experienced on his excursions into nature. Ben is already house-trained and quiet and well-behaved in the foster home. He might also be a good companion for the office, given his clingy nature and constant desire to be with his people. Unfortunately, Ben did not have a good start in life. He was seized in Portugal from poor husbandry when he was two years old and spent another two years in our partner shelter. It was only at the animal shelter that he learned not all people are bad, and over time, the initially completely terrified Ben, who wanted nothing to do with people, became a little charmer who knows how to wrap his people around his paw and likes to play a little. Due to his past, Ben still needs some time to build trust with strangers and should therefore not be pressured but introduced to his new life with much patience and love. The effort is worth it! For Ben, we are looking for active, sporty people without small children who possess empathy, time, and patience to ease Ben into his new life. Dog experience is desirable, and the environment should be more rural and quiet. Ben could be rehomed to a nice, independent only dog where he can orient himself. Whether Ben could share his home with cats would need to be tested if interested. Currently, Ben lives in a foster home in 35043 Marburg, where he can be visited by appointment. Ben is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and tested negative for Mediterranean diseases. A cat test could be conducted if interested.

About Ben

What life with Ben looks like

Ben is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Portugal in Speyer.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ben, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ben?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ben on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ben if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ben already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ben isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ben and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
