Benjamin

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

March 2025 update: Benjamin has once again clearly shown in recent months that he is strongly dependent on his human's leadership. With sovereign guidance, he is generally well manageable and responsive. In calm situations, he is affectionate, seeks physical contact, and enjoys the proximity of trusted people. However, during walks, he is often highly engaged with his environment and tends to focus more on external stimuli than on his human. If, from his perspective, a conflict arises - for example, due to situations or stimuli he cannot assess well - Benjamin can also react against his own human. For this reason, he currently wears a muzzle during walks as a precaution. It is important for us to emphasize that Benji is not a dog that bites without warning. He clearly signals his limits and initially threatens, and he also has a certain hesitation that allows for good training. However, his behavior could become more severe in inexperienced hands, which is why we are looking exclusively for very experienced dog handlers for him. In interactions with other animals, Benjamin also shows clear preferences. Without guidance, he reacts strongly to other male dogs and tends to defend himself forward in direct contact, whereas with guidance he can be led calmly alongside other male dogs during group walks. He is usually much more relaxed towards female dogs and is more likely to accept a clear command from them. At the beginning of March, Benjamin received a hormone chip and is currently chemically neutered. November 2025 update: Benji now shows aggressive behavior towards strangers outside the shelter, and it is not entirely clear what triggers this behavior. Sometimes he reacts to children, sometimes to adults.

About Benjamin

What life with Benjamin looks like

Benjamin is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Northeim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Benjamin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Benjamin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Northeim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Benjamin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Benjamin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Northeim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Benjamin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Benjamin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Northeim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Benjamin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
