Bertha

Border Collie · Female · Adult · 4 years

Bertha is looking for a home with quiet walking areas nearby, with loving and active adopters who can take her on sniffy adventures, who will take the time to help her settle in with minimal visitors to begin with and give her all the love and attention she deserves. She could live with older secondary school children who can let her approach at her own pace, who will play with her nicely and will give her space to rest when needed. Bertha likes all of the attention to herself so would like to be the only pet in the home and would like to go for walks in quieter areas where she can explore and sniff at her leisure. Bertha has some training under her belt, she does a lovely “sit” and is currently doing muzzle training as she will need to be on a lead and muzzle at all times when in public, she would be happy to engage in short, sweet session if a tasty treat is on offer. She needs a private, secure garden with high fencing so she can have some fun time off lead. Bertha can settle nicely in the home, so could be left for up to 4 hours, any leaving time would need to be built up slowly once she has had time to settle in. Bertha will need to meet her adopters multiple times prior to going home with potential home visits to make sure she is settling in nicely so please bear this in mind when applying. Super snuggly Bertha is a 4 and a half year old Border Collie who loves to sit and watch the world go by. Once she is settled her playful side comes out, she loves soft toys and balls and will play with them with her favourite people or solo, she loves a game of fetch. She enjoys fusses and will lean on you for more, and if she is feeling really relaxed she will climb into your lap for ultimate snuggle time. She does like her own space and will sometimes take herself off to her bed for a bit of peace and quiet. This wonderful lady is looking for her new home now.

About Bertha

What life with Bertha looks like

Bertha is a adult border collie dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bertha, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bertha?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bertha on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bertha if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bertha already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bertha isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bertha and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
