Berto

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 8 months

Berto celebrates his second birthday in April 2024, and to mark the occasion, he wishes for his own family. When the cute Brittany mix was found in February 2023 among the countless greenhouses around El Ejido, the young puppy was very fearful, panicking at any touch, and only rarely dared to look the helpers in the animal shelter in the eye. Since there was too little time in our small facility for our friends to convince such a traumatized dog of the trustworthiness of people, Berto was moved to a small specialized pension in the summer, where they took in the lovable little scaredy-cat. After 8 months of cuddles and treats, with lots of training and endless patience, Berto is now ready to book his journey to great happiness and move into a real home. Berto is still a reserved dog who doesn’t need action to be happy. He conquers the world at his own pace and needs reliable people by his side who are willing to accompany him patiently and with motivation. Our dear charmer also likes to orient himself to fellow animals, so a confident only dog in the house would be helpful—but that is not a must, just the cherry on top. Berto now initiates contact with people he feels comfortable with, but he decides for himself how much and what kind of affection is just right for him. That’s why we would prefer a home without children for our shy gentleman, not even for the children of the family, who can certainly learn to make friends with the affectionate bearded one. But there are always unexpected visits, noise— and sometimes retreat options are not accepted. Berto needs a lot of security, understanding, and safety. If you want to embark on a journey with this wonderful male dog to become the best companion, soul comforter, and cuddle buddy, and if you can already sense from Bertos’ photos how much every minute of patience pays off to turn the shy teenager into a confident young man, then we look forward to hearing from you!. This is a young, adolescent dog.

DE·Show original

About Berto

What life with Berto looks like

Berto is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
