Beryl

Male · Senior · 9 years

Beryl is a dog who throughout his entire life had no friendly relationships with humans. He was tethered and served as a guard dog, it was enough to feed him and the work would be done. The "caregiver" died and in this way Beryl came to us. Currently Beryl is restrained, a court case is ongoing regarding his neglect. After the death of the "caregiver", the family caused the dog to live in very poor conditions. One could say that Beryl fell from the rain into the gutter coming to us. But nothing could be more misleading! Now he is beginning a new life with great hope for a new future! We are looking for a temporary home, transitioning to a permanent one (after the trial ends). Beryl does not seek contact with humans, exploring the world is very important to him. He doesn't walk perfectly on a leash, but it's clear that he has a lot to make up for. Beryl is not very good at relationships with humans, no one taught him. You can attach the leash, adjust the paw if it gets tangled during a walk, there is no problem with that. He is not a snob. It would be wonderful if there was a person who wanted to create such conditions for Beryl, give him time and space to open up to the beautiful friendship between a dog and a human. Beryl weighs 29 kg, is about 8 years old. He is waiting for you at our animal shelter. We will gladly provide any information, share videos, and help with introduction. About Beryl

What life with Beryl looks like

Beryl is a medium-sized senior dog waiting at Schronisko Choszczno in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Beryl, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Beryl?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Choszczno handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Beryl on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Beryl if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Choszczno will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Beryl already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Beryl isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Choszczno early rather than rehoming privately; they know Beryl and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
