Berty

European Shorthair · Male · Senior · 13 years

Betty is 13 years old, female and spayed. The beautiful cat had to leave her familiar home due to her owner's health problems. This loss is a big adjustment for Betty, as it is especially difficult for an older and more shy cat to make such a change. Now we are looking for very special people for Betty who will meet her with patience, calmness and a lot of love and give her the chance to regain trust and feel safe. Betty is a quiet and shy cat that does not immediately approach every person. In a new environment, she needs time to settle in and get to know the new situation at her own pace. She does not want to be rushed and needs people who understand that trust does not come overnight. Whoever gives Betty the necessary time will be rewarded with small but all the more beautiful progress. We are looking for a quiet, loving home for Betty in a pure apartment. A hectic household or a lot of commotion would probably not be the right thing for the sensitive senior. Much more important for her is a cozy retreat, fixed routines and people who convey security and a sense of belonging. A secured balcony would be wonderful, so that Betty can enjoy some sun and fresh air in good weather. However, the most important thing is that she is safe in her new home and does not have to go outside. With her 13 years, Betty is one of the cats that can easily be overlooked at the shelter. She is not a young, temperamental cat that immediately approaches every person with curiosity. Betty has her own quiet way and needs someone who appreciates that. ❤️ That is why we are looking for people who do not expect Betty to immediately become a cuddly cat. People who give her time to build trust and also enjoy small gestures. Maybe Betty would rather observe from a safe distance at first. Maybe she needs some time before she relaxes near her new people. But these small steps can be something very special. Betty deserves above all one thing after losing her previous home: a safe place forever. A place where she can come to rest, be loved and no longer have to worry about her future. We wish for Betty people with a big heart and a lot of patience who want to give an older, shy cat a real second chance. Whoever is willing to get to know Betty at their own pace can give her something very valuable: trust, security and a home where she can enjoy her twilight years in peace. 🐾 Betty is not looking for exciting adventures - she is looking for people who give her time to settle in. People who show her that she is loved and welcome despite her age and shyness. Maybe you are exactly the person with whom Betty can find trust and security again. ❤️ Betty is looking forward to getting to know her new home!

About Berty

What life with Berty looks like

Berty is a large senior european shorthair cat waiting at Landestierschutzverein Steiermark in Graz.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berty, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berty?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Landestierschutzverein Steiermark handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berty on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berty if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Landestierschutzverein Steiermark will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berty already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berty isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Landestierschutzverein Steiermark early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berty and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
