Adopt Björn

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 4 years

Björn is a very charming, older gentleman (we estimate him to be at least 12 years old), who had to fend for himself on the streets for a long time. Completely knocked out and in visible pain in his movement apparatus, he then came to us. Further examinations showed wear in the hip joints, which explains the pain and also why he can no longer really jump. He still manages to get to the height of a chair, but he is very happy to use small steps, ramps, or other climbing aids that make the "climbing" easier for him. Because Björn would like to, for example, get on the sofa, or into the bed, and onto the windowsill to lie in the sun. In other words: he would like to enjoy his twilight years and, after hard years on the street, he deserves that more than anything. The big guy loves to snuggle, but also knows when he has had enough. Snuggle beds have become his great passion, something he had at least for a long time and now enjoys sleeping like on clouds even more, his favorite bed should of course also go with him. Björn is now receiving permanent pain medication, and with that, he is already much better, so much so that he even gets a little silly and runs around a bit, but in general, he just wants to be quiet and comfortable. Other cats are not his thing, they should not be in the new home. Neither should small children, at Björn's discretion, he likes some older children and not others. An ideal home would be, for example, a quiet retirement household. But what would be important to him is a secure balcony, or an accessible, secure outdoor area, a fully enclosed garden with a stable, somewhat high fence should also work. Björn should not go into an unsecured outdoor area anymore. Due to our current personnel situation, it will unfortunately take longer than we would like to answer inquiries. We apologize for the inconvenience!

About Björn

What life with Björn looks like

Björn is a large adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Björn, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Björn?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Björn on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Björn if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Björn already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Björn isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Björn and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
