Adopt Bodhi

German Shepherd · Male · Puppy

Bodhi arrived at the Duisburger animal shelter in mid-December 2024 as a surrender dog. His owner was no longer able to care for him due to health reasons. Character: sensitive, loyal, clever, eager to learn, motivated, impulsive, attentive, skeptical towards strangers. General: The young male dog needs time to adjust to new situations and people, which was already the case in his previous home. He has now become comfortable with some people and enjoys spending time with them. It is especially important that the person is confident and provides leadership, because this sensitive guy can't take on leadership himself. Whether training sessions on our off-leash areas or walks by the Rhine, as long as his humans are there and set the framework, he's happy. He enjoys exercise and mental tasks, such as search games and new tricks and is now also able to wind down independently again. As long as his environment is calm and low-stimulus, Bodhi is the sweetest dog. His weakness appears especially during dog encounters, as he then tends to become frustrated and, if not managed properly, may have overshoot reactions. We are currently working intensively on this, and he is wearing a muzzle for safety. He obediently accepts the muzzle and has already made noticeable progress. He is gaining more confidence and only becomes high when he is provoked. Social walks with other dogs are no problem, and playing with other dogs is now possible. Other compatibility with other males: Limited compatibility with other females: Yes Alertness: pronounced Prey drive: not very pronounced Ideal home Type of housing: Ground floor or with elevator Environment: preferred quiet and rural Animal companions: No Children: from 14 years old Second dog suitable: Yes, Bodhi has lived with a neutered male dog. Requirements for interested parties: Bodhi is looking for a structured but active home with dog experience, so he can develop best. Since he is overwhelmed in the leadership position, his adopters should take decisions away from him and provide security. Bodhi likes to learn and would be happy about a training course in a dog training class. In daily life, varied walks and regular rest periods should be on his schedule, then he is a loyal companion. If you are interested in Bodhi, please send us a completed application form via sufficiently stamped mail or email, which is available for download on our homepage (homepage). After that, a staff member of our shelter will contact you to discuss the next steps. Photos by Pascal Wieczorek www.wildpawsphoto.de (as of 15.03.2026 / AK)

About Bodhi

What life with Bodhi looks like

Bodhi is a puppy/kitten german shepherd dog waiting at Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg in Duisburg.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bodhi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bodhi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bodhi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bodhi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bodhi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bodhi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bodhi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
