Adopt Brownie

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 2 years

Weight: 25 kg, Shoulder height: ~ 55 cm Important in short: Brownie is a very active and energetic male dog with a brain (through the wall). He wants to work, be mentally challenged, and simply show what he can do and please, once he likes his person. At times, you have to remind him of important rest periods in his activism. He should be able to orient himself 100% to his person, which requires sufficient experience - Brownie is not a beginner dog. Brownie is initially skeptical towards strangers and barks at them. He needs a few moments to warm up and shows himself as very alert overall. Brownie is not suitable as an apartment dog in a multi-family house with many people. Brownie is uncontrolled and very lively in his interaction with our caregivers; ...but otherwise inconspicuous, friendly and attentive to us. However, he must wear a muzzle at the veterinarian, as he does not appreciate every treatment or touch in such a situation and may react with resistance. In the shelter situation, Brownie is "precautionary aggressive" with other dogs, but should get along with dogs he slowly gets to know and finds sympathetic. This must be tested individually if there is already a dog in the household. In the past, Brownie has shown problems with small dogs. For safety, he therefore wears a muzzle during walks. Brownie is uncontrolled and pulls strongly on the leash at times. This has improved somewhat since his arrival, but will still need to be trained in the future. Brownie loves walking and is very eager to participate in all exercises. Unfortunately, he tends to react to bicycles and wants to chase them. Therefore, training, knowledge and high concentration of the person leading him are still required so that Brownie can be well guided in public. Brownie is supposed to be housebroken, but marks his room here. This could also be triggered by the shelter situation, Brownie is visibly stressed and lets frustration and stress out on his blankets and beds. Whether Brownie can be left alone is currently questionable. Right now he is very restless and becomes nervous quickly when no one is with him or he hears outside noises. He would first have to adjust over a longer period, become more balanced and feel really safe, then it might be possible with him. From the careful wording, you can probably already see:. This animal is house-trained.

About Brownie

What life with Brownie looks like

Brownie is a young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Brownie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Brownie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Brownie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Brownie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Brownie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Brownie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Brownie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
