Bure

Mixed Breed Β· Unknown

Bear is one of those dogs whose appearance alone is likely to make people look twice. He weighs around 20 kg, but that weight is distributed across a very long body supported by remarkably short legs. The result is a dog whose proportions are slightly ridiculous in the most endearing way. He may be a substantial dog by weight, but he is certainly not substantial in height. His personality is equally memorable. Bear is generally a very chilled and laid back dog at home. He is not constantly demanding affection and actually prefers to decide when he would like attention. When Bear is in the mood for it, however, belly rubs and ear rubs are among his favourite things. He is very much a dog who appreciates having his own space as well as interaction on his terms. Bear has developed a particularly strong relationship with a male member of his current family. The two are extremely close, and Bear responds very well to his confident manner and firmer tone of voice. When other members of the household attempt the same instructions less convincingly, Bear has been known to respond with a look that makes his opinion of their authority fairly obvious. For his future home, what matters is not being physically dominating with Bear, but being calm, confident and consistent. He needs someone who can establish clear rules and follow them reliably without turning interactions into confrontation. There are some important aspects of Bear’s behaviour that prospective adopters need to understand. Bear can be territorial around food and around particular spaces where he likes to rest. His current family manage these situations carefully because they believe he could potentially bite if his warnings or boundaries were ignored, although he has not bitten in the circumstances described. This means Bear needs an adopter who understands resource guarding and will manage it responsibly. Food should be handled sensibly, and Bear should be allowed to eat without being disturbed. His resting spaces should also be respected. Rather than challenging him or deliberately taking valued resources away, his future adopter should work with appropriate positive training and management to reduce conflict and help Bear feel secure. For this reason, we believe Bear would be most appropriately placed in an adult home with someone experienced and confident around dogs with established boundaries. Bear is also reactive when out on walks. His current family have observed that he becomes particularly frustrated when he sees another dog but cannot approach it. Whatever the motivation behind that behaviour, his future adopter should be prepared to manage dog encounters carefully rather than allowing uncontrolled greetings. Creating distance, rewarding calm behaviour and helping Bear learn alternative responses around other dogs would all be useful parts of his ongoing training. Although Bear has lived around another dog, his current family feel that he would ultimately be happier as the only dog in his permanent home. This would also make it easier to manage food, resting areas and other valuable resources without unnecessary competition or tension. A quieter home with one person could suit him particularly well. Bear appears to enjoy forming a strong relationship with an individual, and having consistent expectations from one experienced carer could give him the structure he needs. He does not require someone constantly fussing over him. In fact, part of understanding Bear is recognising when he wants affection and when he would rather simply relax in his chosen spot. He can also be quite vocal. Bear barks frequently, so prospective adopters need to be realistic about this. Someone looking for an exceptionally quiet dog, or living somewhere where regular barking would immediately create problems, may not be the right match for him. Bear has never been crate trained, so a crate should not simply be introduced as an immediate solution to managing his behaviour. If his future adopter ever wanted to introduce one as a safe resting space, this would need to be done gradually and positively. What Bear needs most is someone who understands that he comes with boundaries. He is not a dog who wants everyone constantly entering his space, interfering with his food or expecting affection whenever they decide they want it. He communicates preferences clearly, and his future adopter needs to recognise and respect those signals while continuing to work positively on the behaviours that require management. In the right environment, there is also a very relaxed and affectionate side to him. Bear can happily chill at home, enjoy his favourite belly and ear rubs, and form a very close relationship with someone he trusts. He would be best suited to an experienced adult adopter who wants one dog to focus on and is comfortable managing resource guarding, reactivity and barking. He needs calm leadership, consistency, sensible boundaries and a home where nobody feels the need to challenge him simply to prove a point. And, of course, enough floor space for that surprisingly long body and those very short legs.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bure, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bure?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Amospet handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bure on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bure if I live in another country?
Sometimes. Whether a animal can move between countries depends on the species and the rules in both countries, and some species need permits or have restrictions. Ask Amospet what paperwork and transport they require, and check the import rules of your country before you commit.
Is Bure already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
What a animal comes with (vet checks, vaccinations, identification, paperwork) varies by shelter and species. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask Amospet directly what is included and what Bure still needs.
What happens if Bure isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Amospet early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bure and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
