Adopt Calamardo

Mixed Breed · Unknown

That every dog is unique is certainly not doubted by anyone who has had several four-legged companions – and in this case, it's actually irrelevant whether the best friend is a purebred dog with important-looking papers or whether the appearance can be explained by the influence of genes from at least 40 different breeds. Sometimes Mother Nature is particularly good at mixing breeds, and then you get a dog who is either especially funny (I had the pleasure of knowing a 40kg, 50cm tall rough-haired dachshund whose father was a Rottweiler ...) or especially beautiful. With Calamardo both are true. His extremely impressive wavy coat, his bright eyes, his strong but elegant build – no one would probably deny that Calamardo is an extremely good-looking young man, but the mix is really humorous from within. You don't have to be a dog expert to see that our six-month-old teenager (as of 07/2021) has a lot of Galgo blood flowing through his veins, but I believe it was mixed with a good shot of Mastin Espanol – and that promises a lot of fun. As his gene pool promises, our little big gentleman Calamardo is rather quiet, who sees the world relaxed and confident as his own. However, he is also a part-time running marvel and surprises his friends at the animal shelter again and again with impressive sprints and unexpectedly high jumps. Both the Galgo and the Mastin are not known for being easily "trainable," and I deliberately choose this word because both breeds are definitely team players and will absolutely follow if the reason is clear. Therefore, whoever wants to give Calamardo a home should be prepared not necessarily to be the star in the obedience class of the dog training classes, but the mixture of these top Spaniards promises that you will have truly the best friend by your side, who in the best case already anticipates what action is appropriate with the HSH's own confidence, so you can save yourself the words. Calamardo is looking for relaxed, humorous people who can also do justice to his sporting side. A life as an adventurer and children's entertainer would certainly be a conceivable career for our young athlete – so in principle, he just looks for people who take him as he is and want to enjoy life with him. It's as simple as it sounds ... so go ahead and get in touch with our adoption officers so that Calamardo can soon leave the world of bars and concrete floors behind.

About Calamardo

What life with Calamardo looks like

Calamardo is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Calamardo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Calamardo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Calamardo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Calamardo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Calamardo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Calamardo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Calamardo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
