Calceta

Mixed Breed · Female

Calceta is a beautiful Podenco mix female, who has a (rare for bat-ear dogs) licorice nose in the shape of a heart. Yesterday was Valentine's Day, that must be a sign that Calceta will soon find people who will love her unconditionally. But putting romance and esotericism aside, Calceta is really a great female dog who has a lot to offer her future family. Our beautiful new arrival was handed in by her owner at the animal shelter. She comes from the stock of a hunter who apparently started to prefer getting rid of his surplus hunting dogs before the end of the season. We have to be almost grateful to the man, because many of Calceta's fellow sufferers end up hanged in trees, with broken legs in the mountains, or simply on the road. Calceta now has the chance to start a new life where she no longer has to live in a dark barn and fight for every meal with a large pack. The hunting dogs of Spain usually know humans only from short, unfriendly encounters during feeding, the hunt, and the final tying up in often far too small enclosures. It is therefore not surprising that Calceta is still somewhat overwhelmed by the kindness of the animal welfare workers and also doesn't quite know what to do with her new freedom. But the clever, three-and-a-half-year-old (as of 02/2023) lady is discovering more and more each day that life is much more than waiting in the dark to fulfill your duty. Our friends in Spain are happy that Calceta is beginning to seek contact on her own - and Podencos are born cuddling specialists, if given the opportunity to prove their skills. The pretty photo model looks at toys questioningly. Why should you chase a ball that you can't eat but have to bring back to the waiting person who then throws it away immediately? But Calceta will eventually understand how great it is to run, play and jump without any purpose, her curiosity has been sparked. If you want to be part of Calceta's start in her life as a family dog, if you want to show her what it's like to lie on your back balancing your legs in the air while someone strokes your pink belly, if you like being outdoors, if you want to patiently and humorously help Calceta forget that she was an interchangeable working animal at any time, then we look forward to hearing from you soon!. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

DE·Show original

About Calceta

What life with Calceta looks like

Calceta is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Calceta, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Calceta?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Calceta on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Calceta if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Calceta already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Calceta isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Calceta and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
