Adopt Canela

Podenco · Female · Adult · 4 years

Akira Dog Sanctuary Input 13 November 2025: Canela is a beautiful calm Podenco lady. She is currently in a run with both males and females and gets along well with other dogs. Please note, during feeding time she needs to be separated because she defends her food bowl. Cookies can be distributed in the run with other dogs, but as soon as the food bowl is involved, she will defend it. Canela has a calm character, she avoids crowds and often lies alone in the sunshine to sleep. When walking she walks very calmly, she does not pull or barely pulls on the leash. She comes from far, because when she first arrived at the animal shelter, she was not approachable and did not want to walk at all. Now you can approach her and she will walk with you. However, Canela is a dog that everything must be built up slowly, there are also volunteers with whom she really does not want to walk! Canela is looking for a home where patience, calmness and trust are central. A home with another dog would certainly be nice for her because she does get a bit upset by other dogs, but then make sure that she (especially in the beginning) gets separate food. Young children and a busy living environment are not a match for Canela.

About Canela

What life with Canela looks like

Canela is a medium-sized adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Canela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Canela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Canela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Canela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Canela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Canela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Canela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
