Canelo

Akita · Male · Young · 3 years

Meet Canelo! Canelo is a fun-loving Akita cross with a big personality and an even bigger heart! This handsome boy is always pleased to see people and greets everyone with a wagging tail, a goofy smile and plenty of enthusiasm. Once he knows you, he loves nothing more than climbing up beside you for a cuddle and being part of the action. Canelo is looking for a home with owners who have some understanding of Akita breed traits and are happy to continue his training. He already has some lovely foundations in place and responds well to positive, reward-based training. Building his confidence with handling, practising loose lead walking and continuing his social skills will help him settle into family life. He is a sociable dog who enjoys spending time with other dogs and has shown lovely communication skills in his assessments. He particularly enjoys playful dogs who like a bit of rough-and-tumble, but is also able to take breaks and relax before choosing to re-engage. Canelo could happily live with another dog following successful introductions and would enjoy having a canine companion to share his home with. Canelo can live with teenagers aged 13+ who are confident around larger dogs and can be involved in his ongoing training and enrichment. Canelo would love a home away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city where he can enjoy quieter walks while he settles into his new routine. A private garden would be a bonus but isn’t essential, provided his new family can offer plenty of exercise, enrichment and opportunities to explore. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion with plenty of character who will keep you smiling every day, Canelo could be the perfect addition to your family. About Canelo

What life with Canelo looks like

Canelo is a medium-sized young adult akita dog waiting at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Canelo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Canelo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Canelo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Canelo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Canelo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Canelo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Canelo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
