Adopt Catalino

Male · Adult · 6 years

Catalino is a hilariously people-oriented dog who absorbs every caress from familiar (!!) people like a sponge. He loves snuggling up closely to his primary caregiver and could lie there for hours. This wasn't always the case, as the originally Spanish rescue male dog couldn't settle down at first and found it very difficult to integrate into shelter life. Lino is still very much in his stereotypical behaviors today, still circling in the exercise yard and on walks. He suffers greatly from the daily shelter stress, which has been going on for over a year. But compared to the initial time, it has improved significantly. He loves being out and about and also enjoys walking in mixed dog groups. With other dogs, he gets along well, and direct contact decides the outcome based on mutual liking. Rassetypically, Catalino has a very pronounced prey drive, which should not be underestimated. We have been making a lot of effort to advertise Catalino in the last few months and have had some interested parties. Unfortunately, during these visits, we had to realize that Lino has a pretty big problem with being touched, gazed at, or otherwise "harassed" by strangers. In such situations, Catalino knows very well how many teeth he has and what they are for. That's why he also wears a muzzle, which he tolerates without a problem. This behavior was never so pronounced before, as Lino had no issues with his trusted people and almost all staff from the beginning. So, we had to reconsider our wishes for a new home for him, which has unfortunately pushed the ideal home even further away. We are now looking for an active family without cats or small animals and without children who enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors. His new home should be more rural, as he is absolutely not a city dog. Dog experience is now a strict requirement, and his new family should ideally be familiar with hunting dogs as well. Lino is a great guy in the right hands! But they must be the right hands. Overall, his potential owners must be prepared for a longer getting-to-know-you phase, in which Catalino sets the pace. Is there someone out there who is looking for a slightly more demanding dog type, with whom you can definitely bond after the initial tough phase? Come on, sign up!.

Traut euch, meldet euch!

About Catalino

What life with Catalino looks like

Catalino is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Herne-Wanne in Herne.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Catalino, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Catalino?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Herne-Wanne handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Catalino on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Catalino if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Herne-Wanne will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Catalino already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Catalino isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Herne-Wanne early rather than rehoming privately; they know Catalino and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
