Caterpie

Belgian Malinois · Female · Adult · 5 years

Caterpie - brave Malinois dog is finally seeking safety and love. Caterpie is a beautiful Malinois mix dog - and at the same time, one that has gone through more than any animal deserves. When she arrived at the shelter, her condition was shocking: a severe mite infestation had caused a large, open, and already infected wound on her neck. She must have endured quite a lot of pain. But Caterpie did not give up. With medical care, rest, and care, she fully recovered and now shines again as the impressive dog she is. And finally, her personality can also come out: she is gentle, affectionate, and enjoys every form of closeness towards people. However, she still has difficulties with other dogs. For Caterpie, it is currently a real challenge to share her space and resources. At the shelter, efforts are being made to help her feel safer in social situations. We would also like to point out that beneath all this fate, a considerable Malinois dog is sleeping. Malinois are highly intelligent, very sensitive dogs with special needs. Caterpie wants to look forward, and for a balanced, happy dog life, movement, mental challenges, and reliable guidance are essential. Ideally, potential adopters either already have experience with Malinois or other working dog breeds, or have thoroughly familiarized themselves with their particularities. What Caterpie needs is a home that gives her the peace, stability, and appreciation she so greatly deserves. People who recognize how much strength is in this sensitive dog - and who want to show her that life can also consist of affection, trust, and genuine moments of happiness. If you are aware of what comes with adopting a shelter dog, and you have fallen in love with the rescue dog, please contact the responsible adoption officer from SALVA Dog Help. We would also be very grateful for the provision of a foster home! Here is Caterpie's video

About Caterpie

What life with Caterpie looks like

Caterpie is a large adult belgian malinois dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Caterpie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Caterpie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Caterpie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Caterpie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Caterpie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Caterpie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Caterpie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
