Cato

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

The 2020-born male Malinois dog Cato is curious and stormy. He wants to get to know strangers well, as everything new initially stresses him. Cato has not learned much in his previous life. He was kept and seized in an open field or a cellar in a dog crate. Isolated from the outside world in his past, he begins to catch up on the first things here in small steps. Cato already knows the chest harness, leash, and muzzle, and he is eager to learn, but still a bit hectic, easily distracted, and reacts impulsively to toys. The lively Cato is basically curious and open, and he also likes to snuggle with people he knows. However, as soon as a second person arrived, Cato became very stressed and began to pinch – now he makes great progress with a second companion. Since he shows sequences from the protection dog training, we assume that such a training was started. Dogs unfortunately are not among his friends – direct contact overloads him. As he has not learned much in his previous life, the cuddly bear is looking for a quiet rural home without children and other animals, ideally with a single person. An own dog room (especially during visits) should be available. People interested in Cato must be willing to get to know him over a longer period (patronage with adoption, support from our trainers). Cato has an autoimmune disease, which has been well managed, and his fur is growing back.

About Cato

What life with Cato looks like

Cato is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cato, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cato?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cato on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cato if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cato already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cato isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cato and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
