Charles

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Charles - a friendly and curious Rüden with a story to tell. Charles was born around December 2023 and is estimated to be between 60-69 cm tall and weigh 35-39 kg. He comes from a Romanian killing station, where he showed resilience despite his situation. We suspect he may be a Herdenschutzhund (HSH) mix. Please check our FAQ for more information on adopting an HSH. Charles suffers from arthritis/hip dysplasia and needs a home without stairs to avoid pain. He has a scar on his muzzle, a common occurrence in Romania due to the belief that burning the muzzle protects dogs from diseases. However, this does not affect Charles at all. His tail is naturally short or was possibly docked. Charles is currently underweight and may have been overfed by well-meaning people. He needs to lose weight before going to his new home. Due to his health condition and age, we are looking for a sanctuary place for this dog. A sanctuary place covers higher veterinary costs and waives the adoption fee. We want Charles to have a chance at a peaceful life in his final years. The adoption fee is waived due to his medical condition. We hope people who adopt him will be patient, understanding, and give him time to adjust to his new home. He deserves a place where he can feel safe and build trust. People adopting from shelters are making a difference by giving animals a second chance and actively opposing animal suffering. If you're interested in adopting Charles, please send us an application! Adoption If you're considering adoption, read our adoption process first. All dogs receive vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, flea treatment, and neutering before departure (except for puppies under 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs over 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. Please contact our team if you have any questions.

About Charles

What life with Charles looks like

Charles is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charles, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charles?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charles on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charles if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charles already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charles isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charles and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
