Charlie

Male · Senior · 9 years

Those eyes. So deep, so sad, so please don’t look too long or you’ll see the whole emotional ocean he’s been through. Meet Charlie (DOB 01.01.2017, brindle, neutered, microchipped and vaccinated) — an ex-beach pup and current master of soulful side-eyes. Charlie grew up wild, shy and scared of humans. He was rescued by a group of people who walked their dogs where he was living and noticed that he would tag along, with help from Lagos canil (the municipal kennel). He has low thyroid function, which caused his excess weight, and takes one tablet a day to manage it. He’s still cautious, prefers you don’t talk to him, and really doesn’t want to be the main character. But give him a lead, a quiet trail and zero expectations — and he shines for a moment. He will also follow you through the garden without a lead, always keeping the distance that makes him feel secure. He is getting better; he just needs time and consistency. Charlie isn’t here for tricks or tail wags on command. He just needs peace, patience and someone who sees his softness behind the fear. A home or sanctuary where eye contact isn’t required, but quiet love is. A garden or other dogs would be appreciated too. He’s fascinating. He’s touching. And yes, those eyes.

About Charlie

What life with Charlie looks like

Charlie is a senior dog waiting at Mayday Algarve in Algarve.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charlie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charlie?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Mayday Algarve handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charlie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charlie if I live in another country?: Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Mayday Algarve will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Charlie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charlie isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Mayday Algarve early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charlie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
