Adopt Charly

Male · Young · 1 year

Breed: German Shepherd x Argentine Dog Charly Age: 25-12-2025 Can get along with other dogs: yes Can get along with cats: ? Can live in an apartment: no, house with a yard Can be around children: yes, 12+ This handsome, large, lanky male with an enormous long tail is Charly. He was found and already had several owners. His father is a German Shepherd from a working line. His mother is an Argentine Dog, who is deaf. We can say with certainty that Charly is not deaf and enjoys being active. In that sense, he resembles his father more. Charly is generally a friendly young man. He responds well to all caregivers and is mostly friendly to the other dogs. He is inquisitive, curious, and a big cuddle bear. He loves to play and often takes his toys to his bed, where he lies stretched out and plays alone. We can approach him without problems when he is playing. In fact, he starts wagging his tail even harder when we do. The same is true during his feeding time: his whole bottom shakes joyfully up and down when we come near or talk to him. We expect that he can bark at neighbor dogs and unknown visitors, especially when they have ‘scary’ objects with them. He can be introduced to people well, but we must take into account the character traits of his parents. Charly is still growing enormously and is already quite large. An adult Charly will be a sturdy man, so physical handlers are absolutely necessary. He wants to work, so we are looking for active people for him. A house with a yard is necessary.

About Charly

What life with Charly looks like

Charly is a large young adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
