Adopt Charly

Labrador Retriever · Unknown

Charly is indeed beautiful, but he comes with a lot of challenges. He defends his resources and has never had any boundaries set in his life so far. Whatever King Charly wants, happens, and this is how he would like to continue moving through his kingdom. At the animal shelter, Charly is now, for the first time in his life, being given clear boundaries, which does not meet with great enthusiasm from him. In these situations, Charly reacts by going for the end of his leash. Of course, he will always be secured with a muzzle. Besides this issue, sharing is not one of his strengths, as he strongly defends his resources. Charly finds it difficult to relinquish responsibility and, as a result, he is always serious and tense. He must learn to loosen up and allow the good things in life. Despite many areas for improvement, there are definitely some initial training successes. He is learning to hold back and, even if only briefly, to hand over responsibility to his primary caregiver. It will still be a long journey for Charly, but we are ready to embark on it with him. Potential adopters should be aware that Charly will need intensive training over a long period with a suitable trainer, that the muzzle will be a permanent part of his equipment, and that a lot of work will still be required. We are certain, however, that this hard work, the nerves, and the efforts will pay off, and Charly will be ready to give up his throne and dance in the second row. Charly needs very dog-experienced people who can provide him with a clear framework within which he can operate. Consistency, fairness, and authority should envelop this framework. Naturally, there should be no children or other animals in his new home. If you are interested, we look forward to receiving a detailed email with your phone number.

About Charly

What life with Charly looks like

Charly is a large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Troisdorf in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Troisdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Troisdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Troisdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
