Cheeto

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Cheeto - a wonderful little dog with a big heart. As summarized in the heading, this is how Cheeto is described in the animal shelter in short form. The little dog came to the shelter in January 2026 at about five years of age. The friendly Podenco mix had previously been picked up on the street. It was the time of major floods in southern Spain, during which many dogs lost their homes. Shortly after his arrival, he was able to live with a loving foster family for three months. There, he showed himself as a particularly nice, good-natured and people-oriented dog who quickly became a fixed part of the family and brought great joy to everyone. Especially when dealing with children, he was always friendly. However, it also became clear that although Cheeto happily accepted life in an apartment, he also had a strong desire to be outside. With small children in the household, this became increasingly difficult to control, because a door is quickly left open and Cheeto knew how to take advantage of that. With great reluctance, the foster family therefore decided to return him to the animal shelter - out of love and responsibility for his safety. Back at the shelter, Cheeto continues to show his best side. He gets along well with other dogs and easily shares his kennel with companions. He enjoys walks very much. During an outing with a family, including a small child, he behaved exemplary. He also meets cats calmly and composedly. Nevertheless, Cheeto naturally suffers from the kennel life, where he has to spend so much time confined. What Cheeto needs now is a safe home, or at least initially a foster home, ideally with a well-fenced garden where he can satisfy his need for movement without the risk of escaping. A place where he can finally relax, feel safe and enjoy life. Visually, the little Cheeto is a funny mix, perhaps with characteristics of a dwarf spitz and dachshund, or maybe a maneto in the family - in any case a unique dog and with his estimated 6 kg not a heavy weight. Here goes Cheeto's video.

About Cheeto

What life with Cheeto looks like

Cheeto is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cheeto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cheeto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cheeto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cheeto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cheeto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cheeto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cheeto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
