Chess

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Rooster | born 2013 | neutered | Jack Russell mix | approx. 11 kg Our Chess is a very special character – very typical of a terrier: a bit quirky, extremely clever, and with a sense of humor all his own. Once he has built up trust, he shows his charming side and turns into a true clown who makes you laugh. He loves walks, walks well on the leash, and knows exactly what he wants – and what he doesn't. If in doubt, he makes that very clear too… with his teeth if necessary. That's why we are looking for dog-experienced people for him who can read his body language and take him seriously. Chess does not want to share his home with other dogs, cats, or children. He wishes for a quiet place with people who respect his quirks – then you'll have a loyal, funny, and very special companion by your side. Chess is waiting at the animal shelter for the right people. Maybe with you? Interested? Feel free to get in touch with a few details about yourself and a phone number for a get-together! If you are interested, please contact us by email with information (place of residence, dog experience, other pets, etc.) and a phone number:

About Chess

What life with Chess looks like

Chess is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Helenenhof-Hürth/Tierschutzverein in Hürth.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chess, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chess?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Helenenhof-Hürth/Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chess on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chess if I live in another country?: Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Helenenhof-Hürth/Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Chess already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chess isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Helenenhof-Hürth/Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chess and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
