Adopt Chika

Male · Senior · 10 years

Breed: German Shepherd Age: 05-11-2016 Other characteristics: medical follow-up needed Can get along with other dogs: possibly a stable male dog Can get along with cats: ? Can live on an apartment: no, house with a garden Can be with children: yes, 12+ Chika was seized by her previous owner. She had a lot of mats, an unkempt coat, and she stank. She stayed in a kennel run with straw. Her nails were too long and she had a significant ear infection in both ears, which caused her a lot of pain. At the animal shelter, it was noticed that Chika had difficulty walking. The specialist found that both of her cruciate ligaments were torn and there is arthrosis formation. She has no pain from the cruciate ligaments and does not need surgery, but a follow-up with the physio is necessary. We thought we would start with the medical picture because you will fall completely in love with this sweet lady. Chika is, after all, a good companion. With her soft gaze, she lets you melt quickly, and it doesn't take long before she snuggles up to you to enjoy some petting. Don't be fooled: this lady is not in her prime years, but that doesn't mean she doesn't play with toys. Of course, no running and sudden stops, but rather a nice chew on the seat. She has always lived outdoors, so life in the house still needs to be built up: Chika wants to have contact, play, and lie, sniff, very, very much. This can make her a bit nervous. Despite her spondylosis in her back, she likes to be brushed. As long as Chika gets attention from people, she is more than satisfied! Did we also mention that it is really an enormous sweetheart? Even the veterinarians, who checked her with a significant ear infection, and the physio who treated her are completely smitten with her! For this lady, we are looking for a quiet home with people who will follow up on her medical condition. A house with a garden is important.

About Chika

What life with Chika looks like

Chika is a senior dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
