Chinchillas

Chinchilla · Unknown · Senior · 22 years

Currently, our Chinchillas are waiting for a beautiful, species-appropriate home. Chinchillas are between 15-22 years old and require a group housing of at least 2. They prefer to be active at night and want to play in all levels. Therefore, they need a lot of space, and it would be best to separate a part of the room where they can be housed, with daily runs in the rooms. Chinchillas are not animals for outdoor housing! Chinchillas love to climb and jump up and down, so it is important that they have climbing opportunities. To keep the small rodents healthy, they should always have hay and dry herbs to nibble on.

About Chinchillas

What life with Chinchillas looks like

Chinchillas is a small senior chinchilla animal waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Chinchillas far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

Note from the shelter: Requires group housing of at least 2 chinchillas, nocturnal activity, temperature-controlled environment, no outdoor housing, specialized diet of hay and dried herbs

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chinchillas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chinchillas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chinchillas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chinchillas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chinchillas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chinchillas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chinchillas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
