Choco

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Male CHOCO, born approximately 11/2022, shoulder height approximately 58 cm and approximately 28 kg body weight, a basket is sought immediately. Choco, born around the end of November 2022, is an impressive male dog who has maintained his friendliness despite his difficult past. He was hit by a car and left to his own devices. Because he did not receive timely help, his injured leg became so inflamed that it had to be amputated in the end. Yet Choco fought - and lives today as a cheerful three-legged dog. Due to his appearance, it is assumed that Choco is a Labrador retriever crossbreed. He is a quiet, balanced and very kind guy. He shows interest in his environment without being hectic, and meets people kindly but not pushily. Choco is a particularly pleasant companion who does not make excessive demands. He is rather calm, sensitive and is rarely disturbed by loud noises. His missing hind limb does not prevent him from enjoying life - yet one should naturally take care not to physically overburden him. It is currently noticeable that his nose appears somewhat impaired, this should be clarified by a veterinarian. Choco is a very special dog: quiet, friendly and simply lovable. A dog who has managed to trust despite everything and now looks for people who will finally give him the security and sense of belonging he deserves. Who will give this brave guy a home? 🐾 We do not place in very urban living areas as well as in families with young children. Please only submit an adoption request if the adoption is possible at the time mentioned in the text & you have already discussed the acceptance of a new family member with your family (if applicable, other involved persons such as employer, landlord, temporary care). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their foster home or in the animal shelter in a limited, safe environment and have little contact with other people or environmental stimuli outside the property. The descriptions are based on the behavior in this familiar environment. In particular, puppies and young dogs are still developing their character. For a successful adaptation to a new home, they need time, patience and loving guidance to get used to the new environment and the various stimuli and to grow into secure dogs.

About Choco

What life with Choco looks like

Choco is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Choco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Choco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Choco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Choco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Choco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Choco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Choco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
