Luca

Male · Adult · 5 years

male dog LUCA, born around 2021, shoulder height 78 cm, weight around 40-50 kg (currently too fat!). A dog bed or foster home is needed immediately. The gentle giant Luca has been waiting since early 2022 for the right people to see him so he can finally find his great happiness. His size and mixed breed make this loving bear of a dog special. Unfortunately, he has had it so incredibly hard on the placement market… Luca is a loving soul with an incredibly large and fluffy body. Is there not somewhere out there his family waiting for him, who would like to give him a happy dog life? Luca was found one day on the Autobahn together with Emma (an ex-placement dog who has already found her home). At first, it was thought that the two might have escaped from a shepherd, but this was not confirmed due to their overall condition (they were very emaciated and full of parasites) and the lack of a microchip. Rather, it is assumed that they were disposed of because they were not fit for home heating protection. To make matters worse, they were put in such a wretched condition. Luca has a wonderful character and does very well on his foster home. He lives there in a small pack with other male and female dogs. Additionally, he gets daily visits from cats. With people, Luca is very loving, cuddly, and clingy. Some would even call him a huge cuddle monster affectionately. Overall, Luca shows very exemplary behavior. There has not been a situation so far where one could say he is a difficult dog. Now comes the realistic BUT… The appearance of Luca reminds one of a home heating protection dog. Home heating protection dogs are not 0815 family dogs, and a good portion of dog experience/herding dog experience is needed to share happiness together. It would be incredibly beautiful if Luca could find a wonderful, rural home, such as on a farm with little public traffic. Also, a life with a nice expat family on a large, securely fenced property would be conceivable.

About Luca

What life with Luca looks like

Luca is a extra-large adult dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luca, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luca?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luca on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luca if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luca already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luca isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luca and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
