Chocolate

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

Chocolate spent the last 7 years in the animal shelter, and there was a huge joy when he moved into his wonderful new home in February. But sometimes, fate can be a mean traitor… Chocolate’s owner received a very sad diagnosis a few days ago. Due to her serious illness, it will soon no longer be possible for her to care for Chocolate. Already now, neighbors are taking care of his walks, but by the end of April, she will need several major operations and Chocolate must find a new home by June 3, 2022. It breaks our hearts, but we hope so much that Chocolate does not have to return to Portugal. That would be our last resort. Chocolate is approximately 11 years old, 55 cm tall, and has a very special presence due to his two-colored eyes. It takes a little while for the handsome Chocolate to warm up to strangers. But once he has built trust, he is a wonderful and affectionate dog. Treats also help this process along… and for chicken, he will do anything ;-). Due to his age, Chocolate might prefer a little more quiet. He loves beautiful walks. Chocolate gets along well with other dogs, as long as they don’t bother him too much. However, cats should not live in the household, as he does not really like cats. We are looking for a family for Chocolate where there is not too much chaos, and which will give this lovable male dog a lot of attention and affection. Chocolate has arthritis and takes regular medication. With the arthritis, he also gets along quite well. At the beginning, he should simply be given time to settle in and not be overburdened. When he feels relaxed and comfortable, Chocolate is a very loving and playful dog. Older, dog-experienced children are no problem. Chocolate is a truly loyal soul and he should not have to be behind bars again… We have time until June 3, 2022 😔 and are looking for a permanent home, as another change would be too much for his psyche. Chocolate is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, has an EU passport, and is tested for Mediterranean diseases.

About Chocolate

What life with Chocolate looks like

Chocolate is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Portugal in Speyer.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chocolate, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chocolate?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chocolate on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chocolate if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chocolate already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chocolate isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chocolate and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
