Adopt Coco

Male

Breed: Congo Grauer Papagei Gender: Male Reason for being in the animal shelter: Owner deceased Since in the animal shelter: 2024 Husbandry: Aviary with family connection Handicap: Aspergillosis – treated and significantly improved 5x negative avian virus test Coco came to our shelter with a cat and a cockatiel after his owner's death. He was quite thin and a veterinary check-up with a specialist bird doctor confirmed that Coco suffers from Aspergillosis. He has already completed three treatment cycles, and his condition is very good, as confirmed by an X-ray check. Now that the ownership issues have been clarified and the official permit is in place, we are looking for a new home for Coco with parrot enthusiasts who have experience with this species (husbandry, feeding, mental stimulation). Coco will NOT be placed in single housing. There must be at least one fellow animal present, or a group where Coco can find a companion bird. The new owners must be very experienced and able to assess whether Coco can socialize with the existing fellow animals. If not, the housing conditions must be suitable for a peaceful coexistence. Of course, a bare cage without flight capabilities is not an option. Coco is very people-oriented, very communicative, and learns quickly. Boredom is not an option for him, and he seeks his own mental stimulation. Shreddable toys are at the top of his list. A CITES permit is in place. A 5x negative avian virus test is negative. The new owner must, due to conservation regulations, report the husbandry to the relevant authority.

About Coco

What life with Coco looks like

Coco is a adult bird waiting at Tierheim Herford in Herford.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Coco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Coco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Herford handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Coco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Coco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Herford will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Coco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Coco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Herford early rather than rehoming privately; they know Coco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
