Cookie

Dachshund · Male · Young · 1 year

Cookie came from the streets and unfortunately experienced a lot there. He had to fight for his food and was mistreated by children. When we took him in, we didn't know I was pregnant. Unfortunately, it's just too dangerous for me, as time is running out. He can all basic commands, is house trained and otherwise a totally sweet, lively creature. He defends his resources and can growl and snap if you get too close to his food. He just needs experienced people who give him a chance. He loves children, cats and female dogs. However, I would recommend placing him with a family without pets and children until he has given up his food envy. Otherwise, Cookie is a totally cheerful, friendly dog who loves people, but still shows very uncertain behavior in many situations.

DE·Show original

About Cookie

What life with Cookie looks like

Cookie is a young adult dachshund dog waiting at Tierzuflucht in Austria.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cookie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cookie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierzuflucht handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cookie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cookie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierzuflucht will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Cookie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cookie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierzuflucht early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cookie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
