Cooper

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

male Herdenschutz-Mix Born 17.10.2021 Surrendered neutered [x] yes / [] no In the animal shelter since 25.02.2026 ________________________ Cooper was surrendered due to personal circumstances; he originally came from Georgia and was privately brought to Marburg only this year. He is a very cool, self-assured, and intelligent fellow and does full justice to his apparent lineage: Cooper is a classic court and herd protection dog, like those still commonly found in Eastern European regions. He has a very pronounced self-confidence and generally behaves calmly. Even in unfamiliar situations, he shows himself largely unimpressed and confident in himself and his strengths. With his familiar people, Cooper is approachable and meets unfamiliar persons initially without alarm. However, this should not be confused with deep relaxation and friendliness: he is serious, present, and waiting. In line with his dog type, Cooper cannot be easily "led" and has a very strong will, i.e., clear ideas about what he needs and wants. Pressure, undershooting the minimum distance, or interfering with his independence—these are factors that Cooper meets with clear resolve. He tends to want to control situations (for example, trying to limit movement) and is clearly resource-oriented. Cooper is a great dog for people who appreciate a straightforward, honest, and self-assured Herdenschutz dog of his type and can handle him, i.e., also bring the corresponding experience and knowledge. He seeks people who respect him, who can convey clear, reliable structure to him, and who take his qualities seriously and navigate them well, including in everyday life and training, to instill him with composure and the ability to give up control through trust and orientation towards humans. We wish for Cooper an ideal home where he can spend a lot of time (safe and protected) outdoors. He is not a dog who wants to cuddle with everyone, go to the city center, or do agility—by his nature, he spends a lot of time being watchful and observing. He enjoys energy outlets like walks and behaves well on the leash, can be regulated well in critical situations like dog encounters, and looks forward to shared time in nature. Cooper will not be rehomed to a home or environment with children. He is familiar with cats from his previous home, but his prey drive should not be underestimated. At the fence, gate, and also on the leash, Cooper tends to display clear protective behavior, reacting particularly to other dogs with defensive behavior. In the company of other dogs, Cooper initially adapted well and showed interest, but also deliberately and unprovoked dominant behavior, including physical control with the intent to cause harm (had he not worn a muzzle). We present him as a single dog and seek a home that takes this issue seriously. Cooper can be left alone without a problem. He has no issues with putting on, taking off, or wearing his muzzle. Vet-wise, he has been thoroughly checked, his blood test is unremarkable, he has had a comprehensive dental cleaning, and his wolf claws have been trimmed. We very much wish for Cooper to find a suitable home quickly that understands him, fosters his strengths, and builds trust and connection with him. About Cooper

What life with Cooper looks like

Cooper is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Marburg in Marburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cooper, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cooper?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Marburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cooper on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cooper if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Marburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cooper already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cooper isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Marburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cooper and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
