Adopt Copito

Chihuahua · Male · Adult · 5 years

Copito - small dog with a big character. Chihuahua Copito lives in a foster home in Germany and would ideally like a permanent home, but is also looking for an alternative foster home. The reason for this is not difficulties, but time constraints due to work of the current foster mom in the near future. So far, his foster family has had time to get to know him better - and Copito has already shown himself to be a rather easy-going companion in many areas. He is housebroken, walks well on a leash, travels smoothly in the car and can also be left alone. He is attentive, alert and has the typical self-confidence of his breed. Chihuahuas are considered brave, affectionate and often very attached to their person. Despite their small size, they are lively, intelligent and want to be respected. At the same time, Copito also has issues that still need to be worked on. He is currently not compatible with cats; they are chased and barked at. He also reacts very excitedly during dog encounters, especially with the neighbor's dog, and gets very excited. It is particularly important to know: Copito is very afraid of men. It is likely that he had bad experiences in the past. His foster home is already working on showing him that men can also be friendly - there have been some small progress, but trust here takes time, patience and a sensitive approach. Chihuahuas may be small, but they are naturally real dogs with real needs and, like any other dog, require stimulation, security and loving, clear guidance. Copito's idea of a perfect dog life includes digging in the ground, playing and being outside, rather than being carried around. Therefore, we really wish for people who take him seriously as a dog and do not see him as an accessory, but as a personality. Many shelter dogs have not had an easy life and may not have been able to trust so far. It is all the more important to be a reliable person for them, with patience, respect and loving guidance. Copito is looking for a home that does not underestimate his size, takes his issues seriously and is willing to work with him. Then this little guy has everything it takes to become a loyal and very special companion. Please note that Chihuahuas belong to the so-called designer breeds. About Copito

What life with Copito looks like

Copito is a large adult chihuahua dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Copito, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Copito?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Copito on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Copito if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Copito already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Copito isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Copito and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
