Adopt Cuba

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 3 years

The visually appealing Labradoodle mix, Cuba (*10/2020), was dropped off at our shelter in April 2023 by his previous owners because they could no longer cope with him, as he apparently has a problem with resources (food, toys). He is house-trained, can stay alone for hours after getting used to it, and also handles longer car rides without issues. Cuba knows some basic commands, but he still needs intensive work on his leash behavior. At the animal shelter, he shows himself to be very open and friendly towards his trusted people, but on walks, he shows another side: he reacts to various movement stimuli like joggers, bicycles, etc. When Cuba is then corrected, he shows clear avoidance behaviors, which also target his primary caregiver. Similarly, it looks the same with some passersby and dog encounters. To work on these "issues" more precisely, he is currently led with a muzzle at our shelter, and some progress is already noticeable. Cuba needs people who are willing to work on his problems, even with professional guidance, to clearly show him his limits, and to give him the necessary security through consistent handling. If all this is given and the daily life with him is appropriately structured, Cuba has a good prognosis for a happy life in a new home. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Cuba

What life with Cuba looks like

Cuba is a medium-sized young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding issues with food and toys, requires muzzle training, needs professional guidance for behavioral problems

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cuba, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cuba?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Düsseldorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cuba on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cuba if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Düsseldorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cuba already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cuba isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Düsseldorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cuba and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
