Dave

Border Collie · Male · Adult · 4 years

Dave would love an active family who can give him the exercise, enrichment and companionship he needs to flourish. He could happily live with another confident dog following a successful dog mix here at the centre, as he really enjoys spending time with canine companions. He can live with older secondary school aged children who are experienced and confident around playful, bouncy dogs but also understand he is not comfortable with formal handling and will need his own space on occasions. Dave does find veterinary visits and grooming quite worrying, so his new family should be prepared to help him build confidence through positive, reward based training to make these experiences less stressful over time. Sweet-natured, affectionate and full of enthusiasm, Dave is a wonderful boy with a real zest for life who is ready to find a loving home where he can continue to grow in confidence and enjoy life's adventures. Dave has recently had to have his leg amputated and is adapting to life on 3 legs well. Dave is a handsome 4 year old Terrier Cross with a fun loving personality and a real zest for life. He settles well in his kennel and is currently happily sharing with two canine friends, showing just how much he enjoys the company of other dogs. When it's time to head out, Dave is always keen for an adventure, happily exploring new places with his nose to the ground as he investigates all the interesting sights and smells around him. He loves to play with toys and is equally happy soaking up plenty of fuss and cuddles from his handlers. Dave is a very friendly boy who enjoys meeting new people and will happily approach to say hello and ask for some affection. Although he can be left for short periods, this should be built up gradually once he has settled into his new home and routine, he does respond better in calm environments so a home without lots of visitors would be preferable.

About Dave

What life with Dave looks like

Dave is a adult border collie dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dave, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dave?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dave on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dave if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dave already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dave isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dave and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
