Adopt David

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Where others saw an ending for David, we knew his story was just beginning. David arrived with us from one of our vets, carrying a fate sadly shared by far too many cats. He was abandoned after testing positive for FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), a devastating retrovirus that attacks the immune system, damages cells, and can lead to serious conditions such as chronic infections, paralysis, and leukaemia. For many cats, a positive FeLV test marks the end of their chances. For David, it marked the beginning of safety. Thankfully, David had a place waiting for him in our Cat Hospital, home to a small, carefully managed colony of FeLV-positive cats who receive lifelong care and protection. Like many cats affected by this virus, David arrived suffering from painful eye infections and an upper respiratory infection. With FeLV compromising the immune system, illnesses that would normally be mild can become severe and even life-threatening, requiring fast intervention and ongoing support. Cats like David need far more than just a safe space. They require regular veterinary check-ups, supportive medications, immune-boosting supplements, specialised medical diets and, above all, time, monitoring, and dedicated care. With the right support, FeLV cats can still experience comfort, companionship, and joy – and David is a perfect example of that resilience. David was named in honour of one of the producers of the Ben Fogle documentary being filmed at the time of his arrival, making his story even more special to us. He is now safe, cared for, and surrounded by others who understand his journey. If you would like to help give David the care he needs and support his ongoing treatment, you can sponsor him and be part of his story.

About David

What life with David looks like

David is a small adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tenerife Animal Sanctuary in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting David, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about David?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tenerife Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw David on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt David if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tenerife Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is David already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if David isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tenerife Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know David and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
