Geronimo

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Let us introduce the big boy Geronim. One of the most troubled and complicated horses currently on the finca. Geronimo is the one who gets the vets scratching their heads, the one who has had the most tests, treatments, rehabs, and empty results. Geronimo was left in his previous home hobbled by his legs without any movement, when he came to us he had open wounds on both of his back legs from rope rubs, infected, oozing, and painful. He was totally swollen in one hind leg and his sheath, due to old injuries and lack of movement. Time healed the legs and movement keeps the swelling under control, however, if he doesn’t leave his paddock at least once a day and move, it will swell again. He soon became sound and pain-free, however, he was losing weight, not gaining it even with his good diet and appropriate exercise. After almost a year of tests and various treatments, we are very happy to say he is on the road to recovery and putting on weight in general, but it is still hard to keep his condition. However, he is gaining strength day by day, and we are really seeing his personality shine. This is a very strong horse with a sad past but a positive future. Geronimo is a gentle giant, he struggles to form relationships with horses, he is the bottom of the pack, and it took 2 years before he finally made a friend with Cadette. He may not be a horse's horse, but he loves nothing more than a fuss and human contact.

About Geronimo

What life with Geronimo looks like

Geronimo is a small adult mixed breed horse waiting at Tenerife Animal Sanctuary in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Paperwork, vet checks and transport rules differ by species and by country. Ask the shelter what is included and what you will need to arrange before you commit.

Frequently asked

Adopting Geronimo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Geronimo?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tenerife Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Geronimo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Geronimo if I live in another country?: Sometimes. Whether a horse can move between countries depends on the species and the rules in both countries, and some species need permits or have restrictions. Ask Tenerife Animal Sanctuary what paperwork and transport they require, and check the import rules of your country before you commit.
Is Geronimo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: What a horse comes with (vet checks, vaccinations, identification, paperwork) varies by shelter and species. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask Tenerife Animal Sanctuary directly what is included and what Geronimo still needs.
What happens if Geronimo isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tenerife Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Geronimo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
